Superhero movies have had a decent year for the most part. Thunderbolts*, Fantastic Four First Steps, and Superman all left some kind of a mark at the box office, with the latter putting more of a dent. First Steps attracted more attention for its post-credits scene as fans caught a glimpse of Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom for the first time, holding Mr Fantastic and Sue Storm’s child, Franklin Richards, in his hand. Now, according to some reports, it seems that the radio silence from Marvel is about to be over, and James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash might be the key.
Collider recently reported that many of their sources have confirmed that the first trailer for Avenger: Doomsday might screen at Avatar: Fire and Ash screenings once the film gets its release on December 19. While the move is certainly surprising, the fact that Disney is behind both the films does make it sound more feasible. While First Steps’ post-credit scene had Doom, you couldn’t see Robert Downey Jr’s face, obviously by design. If the trailers are shown during Fire and Ash screenings, it could mean that Avengers fans will be able to get a look at Robert Downey Jr as Doom almost a year before the film’s release.
One of the reasons why this decision seems very out of the blue is that Marvel is extremely secretive about their films and characters right until the very last moment. For example, several reports had confirmed the fact that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire were going to be a part of Spider-Man: No Way Home. But the trailer for the movie still had the edited version of the final battle, where only Tom Holland can be seen fighting the villains.
The cast of Avengers also has its fair share of tattletales, who have in the past revealed certain details by mistake, namely Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo. Luckily for Marvel, both of them aren’t expected to be a part of Doomsday.
If anyone remembers the post-credits scene of Thunderbolts*, the Fantastic Four could be seen travelling towards Earth 616. The events of Doomsday are presumably going to follow what happens after Franklin’s abduction, and maybe that’s why the Fantastic Four are travelling to a different timeline, to get their son back. The other interesting thing to look out for will be the addition of many original X-Men members into the MCU.
The superhero team has till now existed outside of the main MCU, and according to a cryptic post by Marvel, the X-Men are also going to be at the centre of this movie. Stars like Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart are set to reprise their roles as Magneto and Professor X, while fan favourites like Chris Hemsworth, Sebastian Stan and Florence Pugh are also returning.
