The court proceedings regarding director Rob Reiner and wife Michele Singer are officially underway. After the couple was found dead in their Los Angeles home on December 14, their middle son, Nick Reiner, was arrested under suspicion of committing the crime. While family spokespersons have been in touch with the media, the other children of the couple stayed mum on the subject. Now, they have finally broken the silence on the episode.
In a statement provided to CBS News, the couple’s children, Romy and Jake Reiner, talked about the “horrific incident” and said that the whole family was in “unimaginable pain”. They said, “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends. We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but also from people from all walks of life.” They further asked for privacy in such a difficult time.
With regard to the court case, Nick was informed by Judge Theresa McGonigle that he had the right to a speedy trial, to which he just replied, “Yes, your honour.” According to the BBC, Nick’s arraignment has been delayed to January 7, and his lawyer asked the media not to jump to conclusions and to let this case, filled with “complex and serious issues” run its course.
He further said, “We ask that during this process, you allow the system to move forward in the way that it was designed to move forward. Not with a rush to judgment, not with jumping to conclusions, but with restraint and with dignity, and with the respect that this system and this process deserve, and that the family deserves.”
The initial hearing was due on Tuesday, but Nick had not been medically cleared to show up to court. Reports state that the postponement of his arraignment could be because the court wants to be sure whether he is fit to stand trial, which can only be proved after a psych evaluation.
Rob’s adopted daughter from his first marriage with actor-director Penny Marshall, Tracy Reiner, has also spoken about the tragedy. She told NBC News, “I came from the greatest family ever. I don’t know what to say. I am in shock.”
