Avatar 3 Movie Box Office Total Collection World Wide: James Cameron’s epic fantasy Avatar: Fire and Ash has recorded a massive opening at the worldwide box office, even though it tracks far lower than its predecessor, Cameron’s 2022 blockbuster Avatar: The Way of Water. While the threequel opened bigger in China, its box office collection in India so far is also far lower than that of the sequel.
Avatar: Fire and Ash Worldwide box office
Avatar: Fire and Ash scored $345 million worldwide in its opening weekend, thus becoming the second highest grossing opening weekend this year, right after another Disney fantasy franchise, animated film Zootopia 2, which amassed $497.20 million worldwide over its opening weekend. The Avatar threequel’s $345 million haul includes $88 million in North America and $257 million in the rest of the world.
Of its total worldwide haul, the majority share belonged to the premium format shows (IMAX, 3D etc), at about 66% of its opening weekend gross, as per The Associated Press. While the opening weekend of Avatar: Fire and Ash paled in comparison to Avatar: The Way of Water worldwide, that wasn’t the case in China, where its collection of $57.60 million edged past the opening weekend earnings of the previous two movies of the blockbuster epic fantasy franchise.
Avatar 3 vs Avatar 2
In comparison to Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar: Fire and Ash is lagging behind in its global opening weekend collection by $95 million. The sequel amassed $435 million globally over its opening weekend upon its release in 2022. It went on to earn $2.3 billion worldwide during its lifetime run, becoming one of the highest grossing films ever.
Even in North America, Avatar: The Way of Water earned $134 million over its opening weekend, $36 million less than that of Avatar: Fire and Ash. But the threequel was challenged by a couple of new strong contenders at the North American box office, including Paul Feig’s psychological thriller The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney, which opened at $19 million. It’s slated to release in Indian cinemas on December 26.
Avatar: Fire and Ash India box office
Also at the Indian box office, despite stiff competition from the homegrown juggernaut, Aditya Dhar and Ranveer Singh’s period spy thriller Dhurandhar, the Avatar threequel has earned Rs 66.25 crore over its opening weekend. However, that’s far less than what Avatar: The Way of Water achieved in the same period. It garnered Rs 128.80 crore at the Indian box office in its opening weekend, crossing the coveted Rs 100 crore mark in just less than three days.
However, as has also been noticed in the case of the first two Avatar movies, the franchise is best known for its elongated box office runs than their humongous openings. For instance, the inaugural film Avatar (2009) opened at $77 million at the North American box office. However, it went on to stay put for seven weeks, dominating the box office throughout, to culminate at a worldwide box office haul of $2.92 billion, one of the highest ever.
