Like every other unusual story about the British Royals that hits the news, comes another with the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, right at the centre of it. The Suits actor found herself in hot water after reports came in suggesting that she took a dress from a photoshoot without approval. She could be seen wearing the allegedly stolen dress in a trailer for her Netflix show With Love, Meghan. Her spokesperson has finally spoken up about the matter, dismissing all speculation.

The streaming giants released a trailer for a holiday special of Markle’s show, in which she could be seen wearing a one-shoulder green gown while lighting some candles. While the dress appears for just a second, it gave rise to several reports that claimed that the actor took that dress from a 2022 shoot with Variety, and that too without approval. The dress in question is a Galvan ‘Ushuaia’, which is worth $1695 (Rs 1.5 lakh).

The spokesperson for the Duchess told People magazine that the claims were completely fabricated. “The insinuation that any items were taken without the full knowledge and agreement of the on-set stylists or their respective teams is not only categorically false but also highly defamatory. Any items kept were done so in total transparency and in accordance with contractual arrangements,” said the spokesperson.

An industry insider told the same source that it is custom for celebrities to keep some items from photoshoots. Another point in favour of Markle is that the members of the Royal Family and other celebrities usually keep these clothes as a precautionary measure to ensure there is no resale or unauthorised resale. Online auction portals are notoriously famous for celebrity items being sold without permission. That is the reason why many celebrities don’t sign using blue ink, because it can be reproduced and copied.

It should also be noted that any working royal isn’t allowed to accept clothing for free, according to the rules and traditions of the family. Markle famously paid for her entire wardrobe leading up to her 2018 marriage with Prince Harry.

On the work front, Markle is going strong with her show on Netflix, and the special holiday edition will be available for streaming from December 3.
