Miley Cyrus, in her recent interview with The Cut, took a jab at her ex Liam Hemsworth while talking about love advice she once got from her mom, Tish Cyrus. For the conversation, Miley was joined by her mom and sisters Brandi (38) and Noah (25). While the singer has recently been open about her personal life, from her strained ties with dad Billy Ray Cyrus to her relationship with drummer Maxx Morando, this was one of the rare moments she spoke about past relationships.

Miley revealed that her mom always encouraged her to stay with guys who weren’t right for her, as long as they were good-looking. “Mom’s always wanted me to stay with the wrong guy ’cause they’re hot,” Miley said, hinting at her long on-and-off romance with Liam Hemsworth. The two split for good in 2019 after less than a year of marriage. Tish, in return, didn’t deny the revelation, instead, she laughed it off, saying a least Miley got to look at someone ‘friggin’ hot.” But Miley explained that she eventually had to unlearn that kind of advice. She admitted she had to figure things out on her own after going through heartbreak. Speaking about her current relationship, the FLOWERS crooner said, now she values partners who respect her and treat her well. “I ended up with a person who means a lot to me and treats me really well and respects me,” Miley said. “I had to learn that the hard way because my mommy taught me the wrong way, and then I had to learn the right way by myself.”
Noah, who’s engaged to designer Pinkus but has had her share of messy relationships over the years, agreed with Miley. Brandi, on the other hand, stood by their mom’s old rule. Miley continued, “I had to find someone who treats me with respect, and then Mom never really put that at the top of her must-haves. “Mom was like, ‘They need to be tall.’” The back-and-forth ended with Miley teasing that their mom has “evolved,” especially now that Tish is happily married to Prison Break actor Dominic Purcell. Miley joked, “She finally found someone who’s hot and respects her, that’s the goal.”
This isn’t the first time Miley has opened up about her relationship with Hemsworth. Back in 2020, she told Joe Rogan that what hurt most about their split wasn’t the breakup itself but the way she was villainised in the media, with her every move being scrutinised. Since then, she’s kept her relationship with Maxx more private, saying she learned to keep the important stuff to herself. “What really sucked about it wasn’t the fact that I and someone that I loved realised that we don’t love each other the way that we used to anymore,” she said at the time on the podcast. “That’s okay, I can accept that. I can’t accept the villainising and just all those stories.”
Over the years, Miley has been linked to several A-listers, from Nick Jonas to country singer Justin Gaston. But her most talked-about relationship was with actor Liam Hemsworth. The two first sparked dating buzz in 2009 after being spotted kissing at the airport. They went on to date on and off until 2012, when Liam finally popped the question. “I’m so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam,” Cyrus told People at the time. But by the next year, sources confirmed they had called off the engagement. In 2016, they sparked reconciliation rumours again, and two years later, in 2018, they tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at their home in Franklin, Tenn. They confirmed the marriage by posting on Instagram. Just seven months later, the couple announced their split. “Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers,” a rep for Cyrus told People.
