Director Josh Safdie is having the time of his life as his latest film, Marty Supreme, is raking in the accolades during the awards season. Led by young star Timothee Chalamet, the film has received stellar reviews from critics, with most calling it one of Chalamet’s best performances to date. During a recent Q & A session, Chalamet had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Academy Award winner Robert Downey Jr, and the latter couldn’t stop showering praises on the film and the actor.
In video posted on Film Buddy’s YouTube channel, Downey moderated Chalamet’s interaction with the crowd. But before getting into that, the two had a detailed conversation about Chalamet’s inspirations, Downey’s love for his performance, and what the movie meant for the young actor. Downey started the conversation and pointed out that he first saw Chalamet as a young and budding actor and that he is extremely proud of the place that the Dune actor has made for himself in Hollywood.
Robert Downey Jr said, “I saw this movie (Marty Supreme) and I am flashing back to when you were 22, I saw Call Me By Your Name, and then just a year or two ago — A Complete Unknown, and I go, ‘My god this guy is technically so evolved.’ Then I see this movie and I go ‘Oh now there’s this other thing’. There is such a specificity of showing the psychic life of a character, building it from the inside out… It’s just an astonishing achievement.”
He continued, “I saw this move, and I was like, ‘F*** man, this is really good. This is mindblowing, and also just because it’s just such a great film. Anyone one of us can say that the worst compliment you can get is ‘He was the best thing about the film.’ It’s that you’re so exceptionally good in that film… I mean, this is a real piece of art.”
When Robert Downey Jr asked Timothee Chalamet about what this period of time has been like, the actor replied, “It’s an exercise of gratitude, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. Seeing this theatre filled to the brim, the reaction we both got when we came out here… I mean, it truly hits my core. For me it’s been a bit of a vibe shift, because in December my energy was entirely towards getting this movie out in the biggest way possible, because I believed in it. I am so glad that everyone here (at the screening) has seen it now, because I think now you know what I have been talking about.”
He added, “This is no consequence of my own — I am a part of it. Josh Safdie, he is an incredible director… An incredible cast and production team. The effort here was sincere; there is no ulterior motive. It was just a bunch of hungry artists coming together and giving it their all.”
