The throne of Marvel’s most charismatic and ‘out there’ character will always belong to Iron Man and the man behind the mask, Robert Downey Jr. The actor is known for being just like his on-screen character, a brutally honest version of himself. However, there are other similarities between Robert and Tony Stark, and one of them was recently pointed out by Shang-Chi star Simu Liu. The actor described how Robert used to stay on the sets of Avengers: Doomsday and how he had created a “Downey World” of his own.
While talking to Collider about his career and his association with the world of Marvel, Simu shared his experience of working with Robert on the sets of Doomsday. He said, “Downey famously has this convoy of trailers and this whole area in base camp that we affectionately called Downey Land. And I remember getting invited to Downey Land for the first time and just showing up in this tent, and it’s all this beautiful Andy Warhol-esque artwork, except all the characters are Downey. I mean, he’s so self-aware.”

Liu continued, “So, he greeted me, and then I didn’t realise that Downey Land has its own chefs, but I had brought my set lunch, and he was like, ‘Oh, no, no, no. We don’t do that here.’ The chefs had come and laid out this full buffet, and I was like, ‘Oh, I’ll put this away.’ And then just the people walking through, I was like, ‘I cannot believe I’m having lunch with these people.’”
Something similar was revealed many years ago, when the cast of Captain America: Civil War were on their press run. A journalist from the crowd asked them about who had the biggest trailer during filming, and all eyes subtly went towards Downey. Anthony Mackie, aka The Falcon, pointed at Downey and said, “He has five of them (trailers)!” Actor Daniel Brühl, who plays Helmut Zemo in the Marvel films, joined into the conversation and described his experience of working with Downey.
He said, “The first day I had a scene with him, he asked me whether I had any allergies. I didn’t understand the question, but later when I was having lunch in my humble trailer, someone knocked on my door. The person was sitting in a golf cart, and he said, ‘You are cordially invited to Robert Downey’s village.’ I left my burrito, and then in the far distance I saw this huge space with 5 trailers, and I had a five-course meal.” Anthony added that everyone’s goal every day was to get invited to Robert’s trailer for lunch.
Avengers: Doomsday is coming out on December 18, 2026, and Robert will be playing the notorious villain Doctor Doom.
